Fuel Prices Remain Unchanged in Epra's Latest Review for August 2024
The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (Epra) has announced that fuel prices will remain unchanged for the period from August 15, 2024, to September 14, 2024. This decision follows a review conducted under Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No. 192 of 2022.
Current Fuel Prices
In Nairobi, the maximum retail prices for the coming month are as follows:
- Super Petrol: KSh 188.84
- Diesel: KSh 171.60
- Kerosene: KSh 161.75
These prices include the 16% Value Added Tax (VAT), consistent with the Finance Act 2023, Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2020, and revised excise duty rates adjusted for inflation as specified in Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.
Price Trends and Import Costs
Epra's review also highlights recent trends in the average landed cost of imported petroleum products:
- Super Petrol: Decreased by 1.06% from US$716.03 per cubic metre in June 2024 to US$708.47 per cubic metre in July 2024.
- Diesel: Increased by 1.62% from US$682.73 per cubic metre to US$693.82 per cubic metre.
- Kerosene: Increased by 1.87% from US$692.80 per cubic metre to US$705.74 per cubic metre.
Regional Fuel Prices
The fuel prices vary across different regions of Kenya:
- Mombasa: Super Petrol at KSh 185.66, Diesel at KSh 168.43, Kerosene at KSh 158.70
- Nakuru: Super Petrol at KSh 187.90, Diesel at KSh 171.04, Kerosene at KSh 161.27
- Eldoret: Super Petrol at KSh 188.67, Diesel at KSh 180.81, Kerosene at KSh 162.04
- Kisumu: Super Petrol at KSh 188.66, Diesel at KSh 171.81, Kerosene at KSh 162.04
Epra's decision to maintain current fuel prices reflects a balance between fluctuating import costs and domestic pricing regulations. Despite minor increases in the cost of diesel and kerosene, the stability in super petrol prices aims to provide some consistency for consumers. As always, these prices are subject to adjustments based on future market conditions and regulatory changes.
